WP3: Steel production in EAF with pre-reduced iron ore manufactured by direct reduction with hydrogen

Revolutionizing Steel Production in EAF with Hydrogen-Based Direct Reduction

EAF Pilot Plant Development: Establish a pilot electric-arc furnace (EAF) to explore the future of steel production using electricity and carbon-free reductants. This pilot plant is designed to handle mixed charges, including scrap and pre-reduced iron ore with varying carbon concentrations, up to 100% hydrogen-based pre-reduced iron.

Carbon Reduction and Compensation: Utilize hydrogen-based direct reduced iron (DRI) for a lower carbon input in the process. Compensate for reduced carbon by incorporating renewable sources such as biomass-derived char, waste plastics, and industrial symbiosis opportunities.

Metallurgical Practice Enhancement: Revise metallurgical practices for liquid steel in the furnace and downstream processes to ensure the production of high-quality finished products, potentially with improved characteristics.
