RINA Consulting – Centro Sviluppo Materiali S.p.A. (RINA-CSM) is an Italian Research and Innovation centre specialised in advanced materials and industrial processes, integrating fundamental and applied research. Established in 1963 by leading steel producers to promote new steelmaking technologies, Centro Sviluppo Materiali joined the RINA group in 2014 while maintaining and preserving its mission of fundamental research up to transferring innovation to industry. Today, it manages more than 20 research laboratories, pilot plants, and full-scale testing facilities, harnessing advanced scientific research to develop cutting-edge materials, hydrogen technologies, and circular economy solutions.
Its research spans the entire innovation chain, from steel metallurgy to advanced coatings, as well as light alloys, superalloys, ceramics, and polymers.
RINA-CSM leads research on Industry 5.0 identifying enabling factors to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and overall process optimization, fostering the modernization of production systems. The traditional role of RINA-CSM, as Italian reference pole in European research, results in hundreds of international collaboration agreements and contracts. Currently, RINA-CSM has more than 80 Grant Agreements for research and innovation with the European Commission. RINA-CSM holds a key position in Europe’s research network on steel and materials, taking part in initiatives such as ESTEP, EuMaT, A.SPIRE, AMI2030 and RIES, and collaborating with universities and public research entities across Europe. Alongside an extensive patent portfolio, it has participated in EU funding programs for decades, including RFCS and Horizon, carrying out hundreds of research projects with other research centres and industries. This synergistic approach ensures a swift exploitation of research results from laboratory concepts to industrial implementation, underlining RINA-CSM’s standing as a centre of excellence and key player in energy-intensive industries, from steel to energy, with an ongoing commitment to competitiveness and sustainability.
RINA-CSM is a leading scientific actor in research and innovation activities in the field of advanced materials, physical metallurgy and process engineering. RINA-CSM owns about 100 national, EU and international patents and 15 trademarks; it points out its commitment to the research and development of innovative technological solutions.
RINA-CSM’s scientific production is internationally recognized for its impact and innovation: its researchers have published many articles in peer-reviewed journals, contributing significantly to the advancement of knowledge in the fields of materials science, mechanical and structural properties, physical metallurgy, chemical and process engineering.
RINA-CSM publications have appeared in high-impact journals published by internationally renowned publishers, including Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, Taylor & Francis, MDPI, IEEE, ensuring wide dissemination and recognition of the quality of the research produced.
Currently, RINA-CSM is author of more than 1030 scientific articles in a peer-reviewed journal distributed according to more thematic areas.
