HYDRA is an R&D open platform promoted by RINA-CSM that integrates advanced industrial technologies provided by selected suppliers to design, build and validate the pilot route for low-carbon steelmaking, centered on a 30-meter DRI unit and an Electric Arc Furnace, within the broader H₂-Hub for testing and qualification. This page briefly acknowledges key suppliers contributing equipment, works and auxiliary systems.

Tenova_RGB.jpg

Tenova is a worldwide partner for sustainable, innovative, and reliable solutions in the metals and mining industries, employing over 2,500 people across 18 countries and focusing on technologies and services to minimize environmental impact, lower costs, save energy, and enhance employee working conditions.

Within Hydra project, Tenova is providing a 30m tall Direct Reduction Iron ore (DRI) tower using hydrogen as a reducing agent, along with an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF).

Leveraging the cutting-edge ENERGIRON Direct Reduction technology, jointly developed by Tenova and Danieli, the DRI plant and Tenova EAF will collectively produce up to seven tons of steel per hour at full production capability with a significant reduction in carbon emissions.

The DRI plant can use different percentages of natural gases and hydrogen as well as process a wide range of iron ores that will be tested in Tenova EAF providing concrete results and analysis for future investment and applications. In addition, plastics or other waste materials can also be injected into the EAF steel bath as an alternative to carbon.

Thanks to these technologies, all European steelmakers will be able to access the first open-source facility that will enable them to test the process and drive their future investments to drastically reduce their emissions.

Danieli is a global leader in the design, manufacturing, and installation of metal production plants and equipment. The company provides comprehensive solutions, offering both turnkey projects and individual units, all powered by its proprietary technology.

Danieli’s expertise covers the entire production cycle— from ore and scrap processing to finished products, including flat, long, tubular, and extruded products, for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

As part of the HYDRA pilot project, Danieli is responsible for on-site erection of the process units. The company also supplies key auxiliary systems, including the fume-treatment and water-treatment plants, and develops, together with Tenova, the ENERGIRON direct reduction technology integrated into the pilot route.
