HYDRA showcased at the 2025 IPCEI Hydrogen Joint General Assembly in Rome

On 6–7 December 2025, the 2025 IPCEI Hydrogen Joint General Assembly brought together companies, Member States and coordinating bodies in Rome to review progress across the four IPCEI Hydrogen waves and align the strategic direction of Europe’s hydrogen value chain.

During the session dedicated to Hy2Use, RINA showcased the HYDRA success story through a project video now available on this website. On stage, Pietro Gimondo, Head of Industry BU Funded Research & Innovation at RINA, introduced HYDRA’s contribution to Europe’s industrial hydrogen transition:

“We’re proud to present HYDRA, RINA’s flagship project on green steel, which DRI and EAF plants are located in Rome, being developed in order to use large quantity of hydrogen, with mixture up to 100%, in industrial environment. HYDRA to drive hydrogen innovation in European industry, processes and materials to be transferred to various sectors too.”

HYDRA was highlighted as one of the initiatives demonstrating how IPCEI instrument accelerates the deployment of hydrogen technologies in energy-intensive industries.

The showcase provided the opportunity to share the project’s most recent advancements, including:

  • Pilot site construction completed / in its final stage

  • Commissioning planned for January 2026

  • Start of testing and scale-up activities throughout 2026

These milestones confirm HYDRA’s growing role in enabling the transition of the steel sector towards hydrogen-based production while generating knowledge and innovation with potential spillovers across multiple industrial domains.

The video presented during the Assembly is available below, offering an overview of HYDRA’s mission, approach and expected impact.
